Fascination Fashion - yesterday and today
guided tour through the Collection of Arms and Armour of the Kunsthistorisches Museum
Harnesses and armours count to the most expensive fashion pieces of all times. What did Emperor Maximilian wear when he invited his best athletes and dearest friends over to his tournaments? Highly spezialised craftsmen and artisans created impressive pieces of art made of steel and gold. The armours always followed the latest fashion. That is why poulaines were replaced by cow-mouth shoes and the ferric pleated skirts eventually ceased as they restricted the knights' mobility. Fashion made of metal has one advantage over fashion made of textile: it is durable. The cuirass, morion and half harness have survived for centuries! A fascinating tour through the best-documented collection of court arms and armour in the western world.
