The topic „fashion“ is attached utmost importance at the moment in Berlin: in the course oft he week the German capital invites all media to visit the official Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Brandenburg Gate. Unfortunately, also this season the omens are not favourable for the Berliners who hoped for big names: still, the big designers do not present their latest and hottest collections on German catwalks.

But the lack of international names can also be a chance for the newcomers of the city. Local brands and up and coming young designers attract more and more attention that they undoubtedly deserve. Despite their advantage of site and the contemporary high fashion, talents like Augustin Teboul and Hien Le wouldn´t have any chance to succeed against Chanel, Louis Vuitton or Gucci.

This way, year after year, season after season, new Berlin artists and designers accumulate a steadily growing repertoire. Lo and behold: the fashion week gets along quite well without Hugo Boss and co. Still, the high quality collections on the catwalk slowly but surely has gotten some competition: street wear also has moulted in Berlin. If not here, where else?

As the city whose slogan is „poor but sexy“ is more into sneakers and elegant denims than into high heels and evening gowns. For this, many rivals of the official shows have announced their coming. Amongst them the enormous Bread & Butter that settled down in former Tempelhof airport and awaits thousands of visitors and the younger Capsule Fashion Show.

The Capsule Fashion Show comes originally from New York and meanwhile has founded offshoots in Paris, Berlin and Las Vegas. Founded by a fashion agency, the aims of the show are to combine "contemporary highlights and current trends" and present them to visitors and retailers during Fashion Week. A mix of local and international brands shall mellow the selection, but the main focus is put on mainly small, up and coming designers that shall take advantage from the international platform. The displayed collections are sent on a touring exhibition together with the Capsule "curators" and present themselves in proper light in the Capsule cities.

Paris and New York are self-explanatory: these cities are pioneers of street wear. From extremely special to minimalistic and reduced, every possible style can be found in the fashion metropolises. It comes as no surprise that Berlin and Las Vegas belong to the selection as here the connections to other cultures can be found. There is a lot from Scandinavia but also from Germany itself that succeeds in Berlin. Wood Wood, Norse Project, Sabrina Dehoff - these are names that have gone around the world already. It is similar in Las Vegas: there, high fashion has no chance of survival, but the annual Capsule Show at Venetian Hotel puts the casinos and tourists in the background for a short moment and gives the talents from the American west coast the chance to distinguish themselves in an exclusive setting.

The Capsule Fashion show ends today with its last day in Berlin. But for the rest of the week one can browse through Bread & Butter and the official fashion week.
