From 7 May to 19 June 2004, Unit F büro für mode presented individual works and collaborative
projects by the designer and illustrator Manu Burghart and the digital art designer Thomas Zeitlberger in the exhibition SPANKING
GOOD TIMES.
Manu Burghart and Thomas Zeitlberger collaborate
on art projects and commercial productions in the field of design. In this exhibition, they showed collaborative works, such
as the revised edition of the video “spanking good times” which was produced in 1992. The exhibition also featured
video prints and jingles they produced for the TV station Viva plus TV, and some individual works from the past few years.
These works, ironic references to conservative societal values, illustrated the common interests of the two artists in the
fields of fashion and mobility.
Manu Burghart mainly presented
illustrations she had produced since 2000. She draws her illustrations on the computer and very often she also integrates
photography in her works. The computer animations and character designs by Thomas Zeitlberger showed digital fashion characters,
mocking the so-called “Praducci” people. Based on primitive geometries, the figures gradually turned into complex
structures. They are the European counterpart of the Japanese Manga aesthetic.
Manu Burghart
is a designer working in fashion,
art and motion graphics. From 1989 to 1994 she studied under Arnulf Rainer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Following
her graduation, she worked as a designer in the graphic design department of Calvin Klein Inc. in New York for three years.
Since 1999 she has been living in Cologne. She does illustrations for Brand eins magazine and for the design agency Meiré
und Meiré. She has also created motion graphics for the TV stations Viva plus TV and WDR. Her illustrations for Brand eins
magazine were inspired in part by the 1975 film “The Stepford Wives”, a remake of which was released in 2004.
Thomas Zeitlberger
is a digital arts designer.
From 1989 to 1994 he studied under Bruno Gironcoli in Vienna and from 1995 to 1997 he studied media design under Klaus v.
Bruch at the University for Design in Karlsruhe. In 1998 he developed the computer-generated virtual figure “Dream of
Beauty” for Kirsten Geisler at the Institute for Visual Media - Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. Since 2000
he has been working for ORF, the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, in the department for 3D graphics. As a freelancer, he
also develops screen designs and character designs for various projects and companies, e.g. for Viva plus TV, DMC and Premiere
World.
