Gerhard Heller started his career as a freelance photographer for German magazine Bunte after in the late 1960s he had walked out of his job as a clerk in the Foreign Office. Heller is a self-taught photographer. For Bunte, the autodidact travelled the world for many years as a photo journalist, photographing stars such as Aga Khan or Peter Sellers and becoming a sought-after portrait photographer. Heller has also photographed everybody who is anybody in the Austrian cultural and political scene. Franz Vranitzky, Falco and Kruder & Dorfmeister have all sat in front of his lens.

Heller came to settle down in Vienna. At the start of the 1980s, he shot for the magazine WIENER which had just launched around that time. From then on he dedicated himself to fashion and lifestyle photography and became style-defining in both areas.

Aesthetically, his works range from elegant black-and-white images to surreal colour experiments. They are all characterised by his comprehensive historical knowledge and a sense of fashion and elegance.
Until 26 November you still have the chance to see his pictures at WestLicht.
