Fashion is a fleeting moment. A book, in the best of all possible cases, is a document for eternity. Presenting fashion in book form can be nothing more than a snapshot. However it is a permanent one and as such it is a key to gaining an understanding of the aesthetic feeling of a generation.
With this book, the Unit F büro für mode has aimed to give an impression of the complexity of Austrian fashion creation since the 80s, and to document the national and international networks that develop in the fashion system.
Although the point of departure of the book begins in Austria, the aim is to trace international design careers. And because fashion as a cultural phenomenon serves to reflect stylistic changes, the topic is approached via different styles. In addition to interviews, features and photographic editorials, the book features essays and portraits. In text and image form, contemporary Austrian fashion is accordingly presented as part of a densely woven network.
At the beginning there is a contribution by Helmut Lang in form of a special edit for Unit F of his ongoing project Selective Memories Series. Helmut Lang was a pioneer in paving the way for a generation that has long established itself successfully in the international fashion business. Unit F accompanied many of these designers on their path to success and, with his work, gave shape to the perception of Austrian fashion at home and abroad. Several contributions will provide insights into the current spectrum of the design landscape. These also include those labels and designers who relocated the focus of their creative work to another country but at the same time maintained a connection to Austria. Here the focus is mainly on the fashion potential of the respective cities and their significance for the design process.
There are interesting reports both on the University of Applied Art and its then vice-chancellor Oswald Oberhuber, who played a pioneering role in the introduction of the guest professor system in educational institutions, as well as on the fashion and textiles industry which cooperated with young designers at times in a most exemplary way.
In order to become a good, fashion requires a sales floor. The chapter on Viennese Shopkeepers addresses the development of this idea from a cultural perspective and looks at its contemporary evolution over the course of recent years.
As mentioned at the beginning, fashion is a fleeting thing, knowledge about past fashions is however essential to get a true feeling for contemporariness. This is dealt with by taking a tour through the important Viennese collections: The Fashion Collection of the Vienna Museum, the Department of Court Uniforms at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Costume and Fashion Collection at the Museum of Applied Arts, the Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art, the Textile Collection of the MAK. And since todays collections will determine what aspects of contemporary fashion will shape aesthetic and cultural memory, the book finishes with a modern archive initiated by Unit F, the CFA Contemporary Fashion Archive.
